Steaming 944 exhaust

My '86 944 Lux (8 valve) has just started to emit rather a large constant cloud or steam from the tail pipe.
Compression on all cylinders is well above the workshop manual minimum and a cooling system pressure check revealed no apparent leakage.
Any suggestions?

You might have a cylinder head gasket problem. Here is a simple test: Place a coolant pressure tester on the res.(engine cold and not started) / With thepressure tester set on zero, start the engine. If the coolant pressure go's above 2-3 psi with-in 15 seconds of starting the engine the head gasket is leaking. If the head gasket needs replacement, be sure to surface the head aand replace the nuts + washers during the repairs.

Good Luck,
Lee
