10 speaker system

Does anyone know what the rear speakers size is on a 89 944 Turbo? I have the 10 speaker system and want to upgrade speakers but have not taken the rears out yet and would like to purchase a set of speakers before I disassemble. Or does anyone know what speakers will fit back there? Thanks

I spoke to a guy at a UK porsche specialists about my rear speakers (10 way system like yours).

He said you'd better really want to change them because ALL the trim at the back needs to come out and in some cases the rear quarter windows too!

Thing is you don't find out about the windows until halfway through ripping out the interior! By which time, unless you're super careful, you've passed the point where youcan just putit all back together again.

Don't know if it's different on US cars but beware. I just left the porsche ones in.

If you want more Bass try getting a woofer in the trunk cavities, it balances out the battery wonderfully at the back end (assuming yours has the battery in the rear). Front units easy to replace though.

I just got some good units in the front and a woofer in the boot, not a big one, but enough to provide support in the low frequencies. Depending on your Head unit, you may need an amp (can go under glove box). If you use the crossover carefully, you can tune all the bass out of the porsche speakers in the rear so they don't flap around, and the sound is good.

I found a FAQ that explains it.

In some post-'87 cars, the rear 4x6" speakers are mounted to an adapter plate. Removal of this adapter plate allows a 6 1/2" speaker to be mounted.

85/2 944 onwards (M490 10 speaker system, M493 8-speaker system)
This system consists of a better quality head unit with an equalizer/booster in dash. Each door contains 3 speakers - a 5-1/2" woofer and a 4" midrange mounted under the armrest with a small tweeter mounted above the power window controls. Each rear quarter contains 2 speakers - a 6 1/2" woofer and a nn" midrange.

The back windows don't 'have' to come out. The vinyl is tucked into the rubber gasket around the rear windows, so you have to be very careful in peeling it out from behind there(it's also glued to the metal). Reassembly just means carefully peeling up the rubber gasket, and stuffing the vinyl back inside the gasket.

If the vinyl was totally wrapped and glued to the window opening, you can peel up the rear window molding, and cut the vinyl with a razor blade to keep from removing the windows. Just cut it enough to where it'll go back under the window gasket, and look nice again.

I wasn't too happy about the first 944 I had to install rear speakers in..... But once used to the way every thing is glued, and 'scissored' together, it's not so bad.

And if you choose, removing the rar windows is one of the easiest job's I've found on the car. I just opened the rear hatch, pryed up on the corner of the gasket with a screwdriver (the rear corner, where the corner is rounded) and pushed it our with one hand, held it with the other.

Hope this helps,

hey guys like i have news for all of you that will make you smile =P Instead of having to rip out all the interior paneling and maybe get wrinkles, tears, and other crap ... how about this. I went to tweeter, and for $75 the install manager pulled out a template he has. 1/4" MDF goes in the hatch along the sides, and can hold up to a 6x9 speaker. anyone wants more details, i'll post pics and stuff
