Control Arm Ball Joint 1989 944s2, 951.341.149.10 and 951.341.150.10

My mystery is solved!

I rebuilt my control arms using the Ball Joint rebuilt kits that are available for the 944, 951, and supposedly for the 944s2.
However, after I rebuilt both arms the ball joint still had play in it. After hours and hours of research and talking to various 944 experts I ultimately discovered the issue on my own.
Control Arm part number 951.341.149.10 LH and 951.341.150.10 RH will only accept a press in style Ball Joint like the 968 uses. The Ball Joint socket on the control arms is NOT conical. The Ball Joint kits can be assembled on these control arms but the upper bronze ball joint cup will not seat properly. It is not only dangerous but still has a ton of play in the Ball Joint after re-assembled.
Figured I would save other 944s2 people out some time and frustration based on my discovery.
I ultimately had to order new billet control arms from Racers Edge at a great expense but it will be worth it. I think?

I started a thread about control arms that are NOT rebuildable with the Rennbay kit (perhaps this is referred to as something else - not sure):

List of alloy control arms compatible with Rennbay ball joint kit

... I'll leave it to you to add the numbers to the list...

... reviewing the post, it looks like someone wrote that 951.341.150.10 IS rebuildable... so.... that is interesting.

Control arm images

For what ever reason these control arms are meant to accept press in Ball Joints only. Like I said before you can install the Rennbay Ball Joint rebuild kits and it will go together but the joint will still have play and not be safe.

Even though I posted in your other thread Iím posting here too so in future folk donít come across inconsistent info.

Even though that is your experience that may not be the case. Before the ball joint kits were common place there were companies who rebuilt the joints by reaming the socket and pressing in the ball and socket which was then staked into place. Iíve come across many like this of different part numbers and the problem is that they could not be subsequently rebuilt.

So, you cannot go by part number alone, best way to identify is to look at the base under the epoxy. If you donít see clip then itís likely not rebuildable. Also just to confuse things further, Porsche went to a non-rebuildable factory design for the 968 models and some of those may have found their way into 944ís too.

Left: Re buildable, Right: Non-rebuildable
