Clutch Trouble?

I bought my S2 about two weeks ago. So far so good (actually great). I had the belts, water pump, etc. changed. The clutch has never felt really great. To me it seems to pick up really late. This morning when I released the clutch, as I raised my foot, nothing happened and then THUD. The clutch engaged with a jolt. Do these things indicate a failing clutch, pressure plate, or could it be the master/slave? I haven't noticed any leaking fluid. around the master or inside the car above the pedal. I haven't checked the slave yet.
Thanks
Dave

Late enguagement would be a master/slave scenario.

Does it always "clunk" when you let your foot off the clutch?

Actually it only "clunked" once. I was also thinking that it was the hydraulics. I'll start there.
Thanks

The slave cylinder is a fairly common fault point with these cars. Unless you've got maintenance records showing a recent replacement it's generally recommended around here that both the master and the slave be replaced at the same time.
