shifter lateral movement

Lots of lateral movement in my shifter. Just reassembled most of the car and do not remember there being that much side to side movement even in gear. Where to start looking?

a very typical problem. Assuming you have checked the obvious that the shift rod connections on the trans side are all good and tight, you'll want to check the side post on the shifter where it connects to the shift rod. The post and socket have a tendency to get worn on the left and right sides, causing slop side-to-side.

If you can't find a used one, only944.com sells an improved design replacement:

you can also make your own shift linkage with basic off-the-shelf parts if you are on a budget!

Get the only944 bits for your shifter and gearbox , i use all their parts for my race car and Kyle gives top notch product support !
I had a rear shifter linkage that started to have loose threads after five years of race abuse and he sent me a complete updated unit free of charge.

It's money well spent for your car !

Check pin on shifter first as it contributes large amount of total play.
Some people cut it off and install bolt with bushing.
Some people install bearings and washers on each side to minimize play.
I weld new pin on when it's too worn for these methods to work.

Highly recommend Only944 quick-shifter kit. Really works well and gives nice solid shifts... as long as your shifter's not loosey-goosey up front...
