Radio with Android Auto that fits?

Hi All,

Was wondering if anyone had a lead on a radio that fits stock into our cars (mine is an '87 NA 944).

I am looking for something with Android Auto built-in.

Thanks in advance!

GHEN

Hi GHEN - check out the link below to Crutchfield. They have a great configurator where you plug in your make/model/year and the populated results are only those that fit your specific model. Hope this helps you out.

I installed a JVC ( model KD-X350BTS) and I love it. Get the optional RM -RK52 Wireless remote too. They're fairly cheap on ebay. It also has microphone you can install up near the sun shade for remoting to your phone. Look it up.

Some people try to turn back their "odometers." Not me. I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

Hello Dimitri, thank you for the assistance. I should have mentioned I had already gone to Crutchfield but the only option they have is over 500 bucks and I was kind of hoping for something a little more reasonable. However, after further research it doesn't sound like anything else exists so it is Crutchfield for the win!

Thanks again, and thanks for hosting a great forum.

Then for the info, This radio has Android control via USB but it doesn't have Android Auto which is what I am hoping to find. However, because of the expense of a compatible radio with Android Auto this one might work. I appreciate the information and the photo looks great!

You may be able to find the unit cheaper elsewhere - Crutchfield is a great resource for finding the right part number, but their prices tend to be quite a bit higher than other sources.

Have you considered removing the cubby and modifying the radio slot to accept a double DIN sized radio? That way you get a touch screen display and the full use of Andriod Auto such as maps. There was a thread on this some time ago. It was discussed but I haven't seen any testimonials or pictures. You would need to measure the radio size carefully to make sure there was enough depth in the lower slot.

With previous cars I haven't had a lot of luck modifying away from factory. I've decided I don't have the stomach or mentality for it.

It is a great idea. The radio I am considering has a flip-up screen that retracts into the radio when off, so it will give me a full-size screen in the single-DIN space...however I appreciate the help and ideas!

I bought a JVC double din and found that many of them are too long on the bottom and don't allow installation. Caution is advised.

I have done this and you all are right you have to find the right sized head unit...I also use the Pioneer brand the unit I have is about a 1/4 of a inch too long but I have learned to live with it plus there's things that could be done but I haven't yet or not sure that I will...like for instance I could make a trim/bezel for it to make it look more stock or I could shave out some of the dash or cubby hole space at the headunit...right now I have just been living with it but the trade off is now I have touch screen IPhone/Andriod Auto, Bluetooth, Navigation, XM radio, Pandora, HD Radio and a backup camera!!! flips ups are nice too but tend to get in the way of things...here are some pics of my at DIY install although I am sure Bestbuy or a Tuner Shop would probably do a cleaner install....

These are all of the pics I could find now but I could post more up close when I get home this evening if you like.

Nice interior. A closeup from the passenger side would be nice and do you have a picture of the modified slot? Can you also tell us what model radio this is? I may make a trip to best buy and see if they will let me measure a few radios to see what the maximum lower depth dimension is.

BTW Only 944 has replacement shift boots, all you need for a perfect interior!

Sony XAV-AX1000 or AX5000

Check those Sony units out. They have the double-din front and the single-din back which is perfect for the 944. I have the AZ1000 one and love it. It's CarPlay (not Android Auto) but the 5000 may have more. Fits perfect.

Awesome, several models and price points. Did you have to remove the center crossbar in the console?

Yes! I had to remove the center cross member, light work for a dremel...and this is the unit I have installed AVH-P1400DVD...sorry forgot to take pictures when I got home last night will do it today if I remember when I get home school and work has taken my personal life from me right now.

But the those single DIN touch screen Sony units are looking nice!!! It seems like if you buy one of those you might not have to mod your center console at all I don't remember those options being available to me when I brought my head-unit but times are changing! if I had it to do over I would definitely looking into one of those...

Thanks for your kind words on the interior, and funny I just took it apart last weekend...still did not put it back together again Lol! so it's in the best place to show you what I did with the cross member...sure to take some pictures when I get a chance.

It doesn't have Android Auto, but this Blaupunkt single DIN unit is cheap as can be and offers bluetooth support. I installed it in my car and I use it to stream Pandora and voice out my Google Maps directions, it also looks good installed and almost feels stock, with the overall design; there are a couple downsides though:

The microphone doesn't seem to pick up very well, and I wonder if an external mic can be wired into it to fix this. Also, the LEDs seem to go out after a few minutes of driving; not a giant deal though considering that I use this as a fancy bluetooth "headset", essentially. Not bad when you consider it's only $20 though, and it's a temporary deal until I'm bothered to spend the cash on an Android Auto unit myself.
