Asking? How much to budget for PPI and engine belts and pds

Hi,

I’m looking at a 91 944s2 in very good condition in terms of interior, exterior, engine bay...all the stuff you can see from the outside. 70,000 miles. Came from Japan with no major records. 2 prior local owners. Current Local owner has done some work himself including replacing the clutch. It has Not been driven much in the last few years....maybe 5000 miles in last 5 years.

The previous owner “thinks” that the belt and chain guides were done by the guy he bought it from. He says he looked at the belt and it appeared new.

How much should a PPI be?

Assuming all else looks good, should I just tell the mechanic to go ahead and replace the belt again and chain pads in case they are age brittle?

What should I budget for that maintenance so I can adjust my offer price?

Thanks

I would say at least a couple of hundred for a good PPI. I too bought a 91 S2 with low miles. Newer belt, but no evidence of any of the rollers being chanced so I had a complete timing belt, water pump and rollers changed. Peace of mind! Mechanic said the roller were drying out.

In the Chicago area, its $150 - $200 for a ppi.

If the car has been without a belt change, I would change it and everythig related. That cost? it depends on who is doing it and where it is done. A Chicagoland Porshe dealer charges over $225 a book hour - total cost somewhere between $1500 - $2000 - it is my best guess.

I would budget for Belt/WP service if you don't have an actual receipt. Yeah, shop rate charge of around $2K sounds likely if you are near a big city. Plenty of DIY guides (http://www.clarks-garage.com ) to doing the work as well. Just need to decide your preference. I would guess about $500 for parts?

you don't mention the price of the car. While "maintenance" should be up to date, a good conditioned 944S2 with "low" miles is a price climbing car at the moment. If you are getting it for less than $10k , then buy it and fix it. If its a $20K car, well, then I'd expect it to be up to date and perfect.

How old are the tires?

car info

Its a 70,000 mile car. New tires, new clutch. Engine bay is clean enough to eat off of.

He is asking $13K USD.

Interior is perfect. Its throwing a brake sensor warning, but the owner thinks its just a bad sensor.

I feel like I should jump on it even if I need to put in $2K.

I will call the local specialist and get a quote for the full maintenance.

Thanks for the advice
