Two Pre Engine-Drop Oil Questions
I'll be dropping the engine from my '87NA later this fall to do a reseal or rebuild depending on what I find inside.
I've put around 4K miles since I purchased the car last March, when I also changed oil and filter. Two oil questions: One - I'm thinking of sending some oil off to have analyzed to help me decide between a reseal vs. rebuild, but my ODO does not work so the mileage is just estimated. Is this (not knowing exact mileage) a problem? Also, any recommendations on where to send my oil? And Two - would it be overkill to run some fresh oil through the engine prior to the drop...to help de-acidify and clean things out? Thanks! |
Do a compression and leak-down first to determine the condition of your engine, that should tell you how far you need to go. Don’t bother with an oil analysis at this time as it won’t tell you anything useful, start at your first oil change after your rebuild and then every oil change thereafter. That way you’ll have a baseline and can spot any changes. Btw I use Blackstone for the oil analysis on all my cars. Regardless all that if the engines coming out for a reseal and the head is coming off, you should really do the rod bearings, skim the head and fit new valve guide seals at the very least wyit.

Does speedo meter work?
If both speedo and odo doesn't work, then it's VSS in trans that's not working. Or wiring in between. If speedo works, but odo doesn't, then it's broken plastic odo gear. |
Speedo works...and I have a new OD gear which I will install this fall.
