Well if you are talking about the ball joint on the control arm....
its not a do it at home project unfortunately.... You have 2 choices... 1. Get a rebuilt control arm $200-250 U.S + core 2. Buy a new one $500 U.S If the shop is set up to do them 130 pounds sounds ok. Normally if the shop knows what they are doing they use steel sleeves which is arguably stronger than the stock setup. Good luck.

Fitting a new ball joint into the control arm is not a do-it at home job...
changing the control arm is a piece of cake..... You will need an alignment when you are done. Good luck.

Fitting new ball joints into the aluminum controll arm can be a do it yourself job. I replaced mine in my 87 with no real hassles. SSI in MD. (http://www.ssiauto.com/) has the kit available. Very high quality parts, better than stock. The only concern is having either a hydraulic press or a bench vise with enough open clearance to get the cover plate pressed back in and hold it while you put the snap ring back in place. Took me about 3 hours to do both sides.

I have a new SSI set that I never got around to installing on my '86 turbo. Check with the SSI folks. Assuming they are the same I will sell them to you at a discount as I no longer am in the 'business'.

Yippeee turned out to be a loose bolt on the back of the control arm that was causing all the knocking noise tightened up and problem solved
