Balls n nipple's
Hello all
I'm after a bit of advice the ball joint on my 1990 944S2 is knocking when i go over bumps so i guess it needs replacing, I intend to do this at the weekend but am not sure what the best way to go about this is I have been quoted about £130.00 to have a new ball joint fitted an extra grease nipple and degreased which seems good value to me am I right??also is this something i can do without to much knowlege of the car or does any one know of any sites that might help me?? Well if you are talking about the ball joint on the control arm....
its not a do it at home project unfortunately.... You have 2 choices... 1. Get a rebuilt control arm $200-250 U.S + core 2. Buy a new one $500 U.S If the shop is set up to do them 130 pounds sounds ok. Normally if the shop knows what they are doing they use steel sleeves which is arguably stronger than the stock setup. You say it's not an at home job but did you mean fitting a new ball joint or fitting a new control arm when i get it back??? will i be able to remove and refit the control arm myself?? I have a degree of mechanical knowlage.

Fitting a new ball joint into the control arm is not a do-it at home job...
changing the control arm is a piece of cake..... You will need an alignment when you are done. Good luck.

Fitting new ball joints into the aluminum controll arm can be a do it yourself job. I replaced mine in my 87 with no real hassles. SSI in MD. (http://www.ssiauto.com/) has the kit available. Very high quality parts, better than stock. The only concern is having either a hydraulic press or a bench vise with enough open clearance to get the cover plate pressed back in and hold it while you put the snap ring back in place. Took me about 3 hours to do both sides.

I have a new SSI set that I never got around to installing on my '86 turbo. Check with the SSI folks. Assuming they are the same I will sell them to you at a discount as I no longer am in the 'business'.

Yippeee turned out to be a loose bolt on the back of the control arm that was causing all the knocking noise tightened up and problem solved
