Audi 5000 Transmission in early 944?

Hello,

A local Porsche nut told me you can use an audi 500 Transaxle in an early 944- is there any truth to this, or is he just pulling my leg?

Never tried it, but I've heard more than once that the 944 trans. was taken from an audi front wheel drive. It seems that it would be unlikely that it would fit, but the internals could be the same- just in a different trans. case to adapt it to rear wheel drive.
