steering rack

I threw this out before and got not to far with the feedback so here goes again. Has
anybody rebuilt a steering rack (gear) for a
86 944? If so where the hell did you get the
seal kit. I have been back and fourth with ZF who made the rack and due to liability reasons they cannot sell me the seals. They gave me a few leads but those turned out to be companies who want to sell me a rebuilt rack. My gear is power assisted and is leaking from the input shaft. I do not want to purchase a rebuilt rack, just want to put a new set of seals in mine. Thanks, CH

I don't think you will find the seal kit for the reason you expressed "liability" or retail sales. I have been waiting 2-days for (Pinnacle-long rack which is w/tie rod ends) I ordered for my 86 944, power assisted. $290.00 plus $125.00 core charge w/warranty. Good luck. I have 145,000 on this original rack not leaking but very loose steering.

You could take your old seals to a industrial bearing, seal Dealership they can probably find replacement seals. Thats what I would try.

I agree with Jody,
you should take the seals to someone who
can cross reference them by seal number (the number will be stamped on the seal somewhere)
Unless ZF used a specially designed seal, for their application only (unlikely) you'll be able to find them.

Some of the better auto parts stores can also cross reference seals by number. My local Acme auto parts store can do this.

you'll have to buy them individually though, you won't find a "kit"

Good luck,
Mike
