Gauge Cluster Rehab Info?

I've removed the gauge cluster from my '87NA - and plan to clean and replace the worn reflective material with silver tape (just as I had on my 85.5), and will also repair and/or replace the OD gear.

But "while I'm in there" I'd like to do whatever else I can to help ensure continuing good function of the gauges.

I do remember removing/cleaning/reinstalling those "football" shaped contacts on the rear of the 85.5 cluster, but cannot find current info on this (and other procedures) and wonder if this info still exists, and where?

I just did this refurbish...funny you ask. I do not know how to clean the "football shaped contacts as you call them but I did just update my dash lights hence my post (Dash Lights!)..but to answer your other question. When I took out the lights to the gauges I simply just rubbed the contact areas to the harness and the rest of the green plastic/paper board down with rubbing Alcohol and let it stand for about 5-10 minutes (should have seen the crud that came off...ugh!) and reinstalled everything. Worked perfect! The warning light went off too (it was on all the time)....I like color so when I redid mines with the prisms I added red color to the cluster but to each their own would love to see some pictures of your resto when done. Cheers!

The little "footballs" are held on with small nuts and come right off. I am a bit tempted by going the LED route, although the prospect of these being too bright does concern me. Your solution of "going red" is great, as this color would tend not to distract from driving. And its about time that I begin posting photos, so I hope to do this soon!
