Rookie clutch question
Morning All,
I'll note this in my Renovation thread, but wanted to get the attention of those in the know. My 87 924S, been off the road for at least 12 years, no records, don't know what took it out of action. I replaced the clutch M/C and slave and **believe** I have it properly bled (used my Motive bleeder then back bled it with a big syringe....let it sit a week and repeated that last step with no bubbles emanating in the reservoir. I have 23mm of clearance at the inspection port. BUT, only feel clutch engagement in the bottom, say inch and a half of pedal travel. The feel of the pedal as it is now is consistent. Hydraulic issue still? thanks in advance, John |

Does the pedal return on its own? If not, then you most likely have a bubble in the softline going down to the slave.
Have someone push on the pedal while you inspect the fork movement at the port - it should be obvious whether or not it is functioning correctly.

Thanks KDJ, I’ll get my kid to lend his eyes and left foot.
Much appreciated. |

Since you replaced the clutch master, did you adjust the shaft going from the M/C to the pedal to allow for only 3mm of pedal travel before engaging the clutch hydraulics?
These adjustments are all explained in the factory manual, pages 30-10 and on. Normal operation states 15-18mm of travel of the throwout arm from pedal down/up. Less than 15mm is cause for incomplete disengagement.

Good point. I am operating without a factory manual**. I replaced the M/C and slave because the car had sat for a decade and the pedal was dead; also did a full brake hydraulics overhaul with new brake M/C. I simply replicated the measurement of the old M/C's rod and clevis > clutch pedal.
**Was there ever a Bentley manual for this family of Porsche? It appears not. I used to have the Haynes book but gave it to a kid with a 944 maybe 10 years ago; I admit that I'm not a big Haynes manual fan. Looking just now, I see an online vendor, emanualonline.com offering an ebook service manual but have no idea of the source whatever they're selling. John |

Seem to have found the factory manual online. Will see if I can print pages. John

Much appreciated gentlemen. I'll be sitting in meetings and dinners all week but look forward to jumping back on this at the weekend.

The resolution - still subject to fine tuning once I have restored my car to running condition - was adding adjustment by increasing the length of the clutch m/c pushrod. I've detailed it in the thread about my car, post 106 on page 6.
The WSM page provide my Mr. Nolan was key to me figuring this out, and thus much appreciated. John Last edited by jjeffries; 12-27-2019 at 03:02 PM.. |
