924s gas tank evaluation

Hi,
I removed the gas tank yesterday to have it repaired if it is cracked. There was an odor of fuel if it was filled fully. It does not look cracked in the usual place. I’ll have it checked by the local radiator shop though as it’s off the car. Are the cracks usually real obvious or do they show up only when pressurized?
Thanks
The image is not uploading from the phone, I’ll try later from a computer.

Hi Lewis,

I read your thread because I'm about to pull the tank on my 87 924S in order to clean it out. This is a car that I bought as a hasn't-run-in-twelve-years-project, so I have no idea whether it has the cracking issue. I'm assuming you've been through this thread:

Gas fumes? Tank leaks? Read this.

Once I have the tank out, I'll describe what I find and record it in my renovation thread. Best wishes to you and your project. John/CT

John, thanks for the link. I read in your thread about removing the fuel lines around the filter. It is much easier once the tank is out. When you replace the lines anyway it will be easier. I know you had complications with the transaxle though. When I took out the tank, I did not remove the window as it suggests in the Haynes manual. The metal cover over the lines from the filler was glued excessively. It is thin aluminium. I bent it taking it off. If you are careful it should not happen though! Otherwise, the tank came out ok. Good luck with yours.

Thanks Gordon,

"It takes a village", as they say.

I asked a trusted local repair shop (three bays and a gas station.... no convenience store.... and they're always busy) if there are any good radiator shops left around here and they pointed me to these guys:

https://southbridgeradiator.com

And while I'm in Connecticut and the shop is in Massachusetts, with our petite yet individualistic little states here in New England they're only 35 mins from me. I'd asked because my radiator shows some sludging, but looking at these guys' website, they mention gas tank repair too, so while the "rattle around a bag of screws or rocks" technique for prepping to use the Caswell epoxy sounds inexpensive, I'll likely take both items across the border to the shop in the Commonwealth of MA, having first given the tank a thorough going over with a fresh cup brush on my 4.5" grinder.

{One of the first jobs I tackled on the 911 was the gas tank, which responded well to an external sprucing up: bare metal on the lower half, POR-15 thereupon (I have since ceased using that stuff), then UPOL shutz. Just cleaned and scuffed the top half then rolled the whole thing in Machine Grey Rust Oleum with an added hardener. Still looks great.}

It'll be interesting to see if my tank has the cracks; sounds like it'll be a surprise if it doesn't.

Very interesting to me the extent to which those of use on this forum are 924S guys. Our cars are the next 73 RS's... ,we need to keep subtly persuading others of that until it becomes true. The fact that the white 88 on BaT a couple of weeks ago with a quality mechanical refresh yet in need of minor rust repair and a repaint fetched $8K should hearten us all...even if we're not in it for the bucks.

Best, John
