Pinion Problem? (Tranny)
Ok, just driving down the street in gear, the tranny makes a loud noise, the whole car shakes, I'm almost %100 sure it's internal, and likely the pinion. But I have no firsthand experiance with this type of thing, so am not really sure.
Pulled over (off the gas, in gear) and as the car came to a stop, it kept banging in the back, as if a cv has worked it's way loose, but I've never experianced that either, so don't know. Anyway, after I pulled over, I tried to put the car through it's gears, at a stop, all gates feel fine, and clutch take off is good also, BUT, in first, trying an easy take off, the car moves forward slightly, before a loud banging is heard from the tranny, and the whole car shakes, needless to say, I stopped at this point, and called a flatbed tow truck. (this is a rebuilt tranny I bought off German transaxle, and in warranty the tranny has been out of the car 3 times, for synchros, (3rd gear, and I was told they thought I abused it, trying to put it in 3rd going 110 or something, not true, I drive this thing very hard, but am used to stick, and don't really think I do anything wrong, and definately never shift into wrong gear, even match the revs within 100 rpm or less on downshifts double clutching as well), along with shifter fork. My mechanic told me that this transaxle was the noisiest he's seen on a 944, and I've mentioned it to German Transaxle, but they chose to say, we'll look at it, if you pay shipping, or if it breaks, it's under warranty. (They're in Oregon, and I'm in North Carolina). My 2 year limited warranty ran out in May. It's also moist around the tranny. What do you advise I do? I'm understandably quite angry with this, my auto-x is coming up on the 16th, and I have $1100 I've saved working quite hard, and keeping the car running. Ironically nothing has ever broken on this car, besides the tranny, when I replaced my original clutch at around 110k, it looked about half way worn, with the rubber center looking new as well. Which leads me to say I'm not too hard on the driveline. The car currently has 140k, and I'm it's third owner, owned it for 2.5 years, and about 45k. I really need some advice, and thanks already for all/any help you may provide. Ahmet |

I don't know a thing about the trannys on these cars! Wish I did though.

I want to say it feels like LSD, but then again how would I know what that would feel like? In every gear, clutch, and shifter feels fine, but the car is not drivable, and you can only give so much load to the engine before it'll stop with a violent, and loud clank that shakes the whole car,
Does anybody have any info/ideas? [This message has been edited by 1.2gees (edited 06-26-2000).] |

I certainly hope somebody out there does!
I'm ordering the factory manuals tomorrow, hopefully it covers the tranny, just to give me an idea, or I might even tackle this project, since I'm limited on cash, and not on time... Ahmet ------------------ It's all the driver... |

1.2, does this mean you won't be making to Northern Virginia? Sorry my emails have been busting left and right, even my work one. I'll be able to check email from home tonight at worst case.
Will you be driving your 944 tomorrow? |

I wrote you a quite detailed e-mail, guess it'll be at your home computer...
Ironically I already located a tranny I can use, but for tomorrow's court, I will be driving my parents car. As fate would have it, I might switch out of Porsches for a while, and into an RX-7 twin turbo, or a 300ZX twin turbo. In all honestly, it could even be a VW GTI or something... Than again I might not... For one thing, the Porsche will NOT be my only car either way. (meaning if it stays, I still need a back up car!). The funny thing is, EXCEPT for tranny problems, (I'm admitedly hard on it, but still, used to drive my Prelude Si so much harder, never broke!) my car has never broken down... Ahmet |

I'll check my email when I get home.
Sorry to hear about all your Porsche problems. Where are you going to get another car from? If you have to spend money on it, you might as well fix up your 944. |

Thanks for sharing my pain! All I want is to get the car back on the road by july 16th, and I'll die a happy man! (that's my first auto-x). I already found a used tranny for $700, but only 30 day warranty, and no limited slip... Oh well, with less than 160 hp, on some good 225 yokohamas, guess I didn't need them that much...
The thing is, since my car is down like this (and previously, under warranty, I had to wait about 5 weeks on avarage to get it fixed), my parents are buying another car, called "back up" car by my dad, and "your next car" (to me) by my mom. It's a lot more complicated than it seems ![]() I could use a switch to a japanese car now... Specially since I don't have to pay, a twin turbo (RX-7 preferably, but possibly Stealth, or 300zx) but I swear I'll switch back to Porsche at some point, you all know how much I love them right?
