How to fix this shifter boot?

There is a gap where the metal shifter rod can be seen. I'm not sure how this leather is supposed to be attached in this area but I know it's not supposed to be this way. Thanks

The leather actually attaches under the 1-2-3-4-5-R plate up top. You'll need a new shift boot. Check out this link for instructions and pictures:

I want sure if the early cars were the same as the later cars. I own an 86. I'm pretty sure that's where I got my replacement from too.

Thanks. I will add a shift boot to my growing list

I would try to remove the boot at the bottom and then pull it up on the shifter, inside out. also try taking off the shift knob.

once the top of the boot is pulled up to the top of the shifter, wrap it with a zip tie tightly at the top of shifter. then when you pull the boot back down it should stay there.

from pic the boot looks OK other than the gap at the top. now if the boot has more damage than I can see.....

trackers idea sounds pretty good if you can re-sew the seam past the wear.

I roll with one of Kyle's boots and console cover. nice stuff at a good price...rare in p-world.

Thanks everyone - I'll definitely get some new material to fit to the shifter and should be all-set. I'm stupefied that somebody sliced it off and also that I didn't notice this sooner and thought it was normal. I knew I'd learn a lot by purchasing this car, but I'm surprised by what I'm learning.

I may have used the 'jacket' from a VHS special edition of Grease but I'll deny it if you tell anyone.

Alga actually sells a truncated boot like that for people who prefer the feel of the polished knob. Also it's not easy to install the full leather cover, that one is dead simple. But I prefer the stock-style.

I fitted a truncated boot when I changed my shift knob and it doesn’t have a gap like that, so it is possible to fix that.
