wiring to fuel pump

last year we resurrected an 84 944. some fuse panel/relay wiring issues. got it running and then rebuild the brakes and a few other items.

then brought it back in for a TB/WP/etc job. got that done and when we tried to start, crank but nothing.

after some trouble shooting, we have a wiring issue between the fuse panel and the pump. I get current when I test the connection across the fuse. when I connected a battery direct to the pump and it ran, and then the car started fine.

looked at the WSM and all I can see from the wiring diagram is the connection from the fuse to the pump. my next effort will be to check the back of that fuse panel.

in full disclosure the console wiring was a mess and we pulled the console to try to sort out some of that. so it may be we caused the issue doing that. but no idea how the FP wire runs from the fuse to the pump.

any ideas to check?

well we pulled the fuse, cleaned it and the contacts, and checked the connections on the back of the fuse panel.

all good. move along, nothing more to see.

as it turned out we had trouble with this fuse before.

Sounds like this is for an early car ('84).

The wiring is quite a bit different than for the late ones, which that link is referring to.

The wiring going to the fuel pump from the fuse box should be a green/black, fairly thick wire. There is a connector in this wire near the driver's side running board not far from the fuse panel. If you are not getting power to the pump, but everything else is working, then you may want to check that connector.

yes it is an 84. cleaning the fuse/connectors solved the problem.

but your comment is what I was looking for, where the wire runs to the pump.

thanks again.

now to get the engine back in my 951....

I also have a 84 and somebody did some "creative" wiring to the fuel pump. I'd like to restore the correct wiring at some point. I assume that the wiring extends rearward from the fuse panel and then down the driver's side running board (thanks kdjones) and then exits the interior somewhere where it extends below the car to the fuel pump.

My question is where does it exit the inside of the car?
