Automatic Tranny

I need some info. I have been told that an auto from 924 and 944 will interchange. Since the tranny in my 87 944 died, I have found a free 924 auto in excellent shape. Do I drive the two hours to retrieve it or will it just become a dust collector in my garage - my wife hates them !!

Your assistance will be greatly appreciated. I am not in a position to spend too many $ to get the 944 up and running again - 150K but still running strong.
