The big one
Ok boys, time to separate the men from the yuppies. I need some advice...
on rebuilding the engine. Specifically bottom end. Who's done this? Where did you get the parts/what did they cost? Can the crank be ground down and oversized bearings be fit or would a new (or used crank be needed)? Honing the cylinders would be bad (teflon coating and such) so what needs done there? How long/how much work is involved? Are there any ridiculous special tools needed? A rebuild is needed, but having a shop do it would be cost prohibitive. I have some mechanical ability (auto. eng. student at Carnegie Mellon) so I'm not worried about that, but I do want to get it back on the autox course, hopefully for July 30. I'm asking for advice, tips on things to look for, places to find parts needed, good websites with info... If you've done it yourself, please let me know it can be done. If you've paid those outrageous bills to a garage think I can't do it myself, please don't discourage me. All of my money goes to the afformentioned institution of higher learning, so I can only spend money I find in the couch and tons of my own time on this car. Thanks for any help ------------------ Gielamonster My 944 Page |

Scratch that above message. I'm gonna be paying a 951 racer/garage owner to fix the engine. I plan on bringing the car back to stock performance levels (should be a noticable gain) then maybe add a few more things to help in the power department.
It will definitely give a better feeling in the seat of the pants, both because the car will be peppier/faster, and because it will have a more direct feel due to the thinner wallet. ------------------ Gielamonster My 944 Page |

There's a recently rebuilt (2000 miles) 944 engine on eBay, bidding starts at $600 in case you're interested. I thought it might be cheaper for you than having yours rebuilt.

Cool, thanks. I'm in negotiation with the guy now. The deal killer might be the shipping, he's in CA and I'm in PA. I will probably continue on the route of rebuilding my own motor because of the reliability and performance it promises. The mechanic really knows his stuff and is going to fix it so it runs another 150K miles.
