power lag/loss problem

I'm looking for some technical advice on my occasional power loss/lag problem in my 1983 944.

Sometimes, and only sometimes, before the engine gets warmed up there is a serious problem for the car to accelerate. It feels as though not enough fuel is not getting delievered. When I go to full throttle, the symptoms go away. Otherwise the car seriously lags for a few seconds, or sputters until something sounds like it catches and the car takes off. After minimal warm up, this ever happens again.

Any ideas on what could be wrong?

I've also noticed some slightly diminished MPG recently, but I'm not sure if it's related.

Have you replaced the O2 sensor lately? The DME may also need adjusting. How does your intake boot look? Just some routine questions to get some more info.

My reconds only go back to 1993, but none of the items you mentioned have been replaced or adjusted in that time period. Those are good ideas and I will look into them. Thanks.

Any other thoughts are of course welcomed. The car is absolutely perfect except for this problem.

The O2 sensor doesn't work until the car is warmed up anyway, so I doubt that it has anything to do with your problem.
