Question Power Steering Pump Removal

I need a hint or three.

I've remover the belt and detatched the hoses.

I've removed the pivot bolt towards the back of the engine.

I've removedthe nut on the pivot bolt towards the front of the engine.

I've removed the bushing, for the pivot bolt towards the back of the engine, from the bracket.

The pump is held in place by the bushing on the remaining pivot bolt.

The question is, how do I get the pump free? There isn't enough room to detatch the pivot bole from the pump and the bushing doesn't want to move. I've tried tapping on it with blunt object.

If will help, I'll add photos of what I amlooking at, but I'm a little too frustrated right now.

To remove ps pump:

1. Remove bolt from back pivot.

2. Remove nut from front pivot.

3. Use a flat screwdriver to push out front bush from front pivot. Use the gap in the pivot point and slide the bush forward and off.

4. PS pump can now be removed downwards.

No need to remove rear bush or unscrew front stud. Just be careful not to put any presure on the alloy pivot points, if they break it's a lot of work to replace that casting. GL

Thumbs up

Cool, and thanks for the advice. I needed to be a bit more agressive with the screwdriver.

I got it out and rebuilt it. The front pivot bolt was loose, which may have been the source of the leak I was trying to cure.

I'm going through this same thing, but cannot for the LIFE of me get that front bushing out. The rear one slipped right out, and that pivot eagerly unthreaded itself. But the front one... I've been yanking at it with a pickle bar, doing whatever else I can think of, and it's not coming out.

Any tips? =/ I have to get the pump out of the way for an oil cooler reseal.

That front bush can be a pain to remove. Issue is the bush, stud and pivot point are all dissimilar metals and corrosion sets in as they are exposed to the weather.

Clean the joint real well with a wire brush and spray with a release agent. Try a thin wrench on the stud just behind the front pivot point, the stud has an intergrated nut back there. Then try to turn the front bush from the front, there's a collar that you can just get a tool on to turn it. That should free it up with a back and forth motion. Just be careful not to use any leverage on the alloy pivot point. If that breaks you have a lot of work to do.

I'll take a picture that might help....ltr

....here you go. You can just get a 13mm thin wrench to the nut behind the front pivot and a grip on the part of the bush that protrudes the front pivot, then "wiggle".

...and out it pops.

Oh my gosh, this is the most stuck/frustrating thing I've ever dealt with in my life. X( Can I take a torch to it? Or would that be bad? I've been PB blasting the hell out of it, trying to pry up on the bracket groove it fits into (give it some wiggle room), and for some reason I had this CRAZY thought that if I could tap it, continuing to turn the tap would force it to spin out.

Any other ideas? I need to get my oil cooler out something fierce, but it's stuck in there. =(

Do not pry on the bracket groove - if you break one of those ears off you will be in for a real fun time.

The way I did it was :-
Remove the rear pivot bolt
Remove the rear bushing
Remove the front nut and washer
This lets you slide the pump to the rear by half an inch or so.
You can now slip a 5" flat head screwdriver over the top of the pump to touch the back side of the front bushing.
Take a hammer to the handle of the screwdriver and drive the bushing out of the casting.
I had to hit it hard to get it to move.

Good Luck

Old thread but really helped me in getting that front bushing out. Who would have thought a hammer was needed to remove a p/s pump.

Never mind...
