Fan relay

I’d like to ask a question, a few weeks ago my radiator fans kept running and flattened the battery. I though radiator switch, so bought a new one. Up ‘till then I just removed the relay to stop the fans when parked. In doing so I noticed a slight discolouration on two of the spade connectors ——V1 and V2. I cleaned these connectors and by coincidence or not the fans are behaving normally. My question being, would the lack of V1 and V2 making contact with the circuit, when they were discoloured/ dirty, be another cause of fans always running? As yet I have not needed to change the switch.
