OT: WRC Rally of NZ
Anyone see it? i was a volunteer working on the start team. i started 6 cars on friday before i had to have a lie down. I was so hungover. im still sick on saturday. On thurs night i drank 8 stubbies of tui, 2 woody's and nearly a whole bottle of sherry. I slept most of the day yesterday. besides my absence from the startline it went smoothly. gronholm had a real war face on. his was one of the last cars i started before i left. The ford's were really fumey, which didnt help me much.
my role was pretty basic. I bring them to the line, make sure theyre belted in, helmets done up. approve their starting time, make sure they go on time and if he equipment goes down i do a manual hand countdown. It was raining hard on Saturday night. I had a blast tho!!! Didnt finish till 11.00 cos of pulling down all the tentage and equipment but it went sweet as with no trouble really, except for one car trying to jump the queue, and the countdown equipment going off line for the last 10-12 cars in my lane so i had to count them down by hand. When i told kiwi Geoff Argle i had to hand start him he looked at me funny and asked if i was going to push, rofl! it was about 30mins before the stages that it started raining and i was caked in mud after 3 starts. my mate in the other lane nearly shat himself as one of the big players subbies (cant remember the driver) rolled up to him then reversed 10m and started practice launches right back at him!! It was a successful stage, the bosses were happy, and i got some good photos! Oh i forgot to say about the shakedown on Thursday! Burns reaction time on one of his starts was a perfect 0.0 sunday was the complete opposite of saturday. i started on stages 19/20 and it was hot and dry and dusty as hell. And long. long and tiring. My g/f isnt even back yet, but theres a reason im home early After packing up my stage me and another dude volunteered to head back to the velodrome to navigate a rally car back to Sky city... but only cos we were good c*nts like that! I got into the 'Mexico' evo 7. After some small talk i found his english sucked, his car was a bit tucker- in broken english " My brakes, they are gone..." I took him onto the southern and tried to keep him in the right lane. I "tried"... but not very hard, i was having too much fun. Traffic was heavy as u'd expect for 4.30pm and i was trying to get him to use his indicators, but wtf is spanish for indicators??!?!!? Cos he sure as hell didnt know either. As soon as we got onto the motorway we had a old white corolla levin trueno thing with blacked out tail lights and full of young punks waving and cheering at us and they did a few quick accelerations but that was no use. My driver didnt even drop down and from 90 - to an almost instant 150kph. He then started chasing a fast late model white galant. I thought it was a bunch of boy racers until we cruised up next to them and my drivers cellph rang i realised it was my drivers crew in the galant. Traffic started to build up cos of a crash on the harbour bridge and we came to a complete stop a couple of times. The first stop the driver played with the boost settings on the centre console and off we went to catch up to the galant again. I couldnt believe it. remember- NO INDICATING! Without dropping down still he raced from 80kph up to 166kph and did a big slalom across three lanes on the New Market overpass thru six f**king cars!. My leg muscles were tensed and i was bracing myself against the foot tray and i still couldnt stop smiling! i dont advocate street racing, but that was F***ing COOL! We talked abit more about the rally and also about how strict the police have been during their stay!!! This one rally i wont forget, i cant wait till the rally of rotorua!
