87 Porsche 944 hard to start

When the car starts it usually runs great all day, but when turned off it sometimes fails to start and you have to let it set for a couple of hours before it will start. On the no start days it turns over, but gives no sign of trying to start and a slight odor of gas is present under the hood. On start days it usually starts in a couple of seconds and runs great until you turn the key off. It may or may not re-start. Parts replaced: DME/Fuel relay, coil & rotor. Power is present to & from the coil, but not to the spark plug (when engine is cranked)and the wires/distributor appear to be in good shape. I don't believe it has a fuel problem, since it runs great when started without any further problems. What is an easy way to test/check the DME module/key ignition or ? for problems? I have a Haynes 944 shop manual, but the info is very limited. The car has 113K miles and looks good. I picked it up from the 2nd owner. Suggestions please.

Note: Thanks to all for comments/suggestions.

I'd be checking for a bad ground near the battery or in the engine compartment first. Just a suggestion.

Just an idea..Try disarming the alarm system/circuit. This has affected the ignition system on some 944s.

check the gap of the sensor behind the engine(back of intake)..see if the connectors are properly connected...also check try pulling the sensor out(one mounted on the bell housing)(flywheel) i believe it is a 10 mm bolt..unscrew and pull that out clean it and also i believe the spec.(clearance is 7mm to the flywheel)...i do believe that the computer is not reading the pulse right...also check for carbon tracks on the distributor cap..and clean it ..also the contact point too ...hope this solves ur problem

Where is the alarm system located on a 1987? Was it an option? No alarm relays/fuses are addressed in the listing attached to lid box and I have no external key holes for on/off alarm?
