1987/944 hesitation and intermittent skip during acceleration, cold or warmed up
Hello, I’m new to the forum please bare with me until I learn my way. Last fall my car developed a problem of shutting off after driving approximately 1-2 miles, I would check the fuses, all looked good, it would crank back up and get me home but just barely. After replacing 1st the DME relay then the fuel pump and fuel filter no change. Then it got to where it would not start at all. After talking to an mechanic that had worked on it long ago he said check the ECM. Sure enough it had gotten wet due to a leaking windshield. Replaced the windshield and sent the ECM to be repaired. Now it is cranking up good and running but with this hesitation and skip, also doesn’t seem to have good power. Last week installed new plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, runs slightly better but still hesitating and intermittent skip. Could I have a fuel delivery problem? I’ve never messed with the fuel injection, and don’t have any experience with it. Help!

It sounds like a fuel delivery issue. Check the fuel pressure parameters per Clarks Garage and if they're within tolerance, do a check on the fuel injectors for spray patterns. I've found that pulling the fuel rail with the injectors attached, jumpering the DME relay (which pressurizes the system) and then using a 9Volt battery to touch the individual injectors to check the spray pattern into a glass or plastic bowl or cup. If the spray pattern isn't a clean cone then have them rebuilt. I recommend Witch Hunter in Duval, WA. They charge about $100 to rebuild and certify them. Also a possible connector issue on one or more of the injectors. Good luck on this.

It's hard for fuel to cause a miss, if that's what you mean by "skip".
I would look at spark and injector pulse. Maybe wiring or the ECU is still faulty, or the ignition switch or an alarm system issue. If you can get it to miss while in the garage, an inductive timing light is nice to look for spark, and a NOID light for injector pulse. If it smooths out and does not miss if given a supply of starting fluid into a vacuum line, that would point to fuel delivery.
