Removing ignition switch housing while steering is locked
 

Hi all. So, some moron tried to steal my 944 and broke a key (or something) off inside the ignition switch while the steering was locked.

I have an 83 with the early style switch. I followed the ignition removal guide here:

I then realized that I can't actually remove the ignition switch housing off the steering column while the steering lock cam is engaged. Kinda stumped at the moment...

Any ideas? I've been trying to remove whatever is stuck in the lock to no avail. I don't really want to have to fully mangle the existing ignition housing to remove it, but I can't seem to think of another way. Drive a shim down the column between the shaft and housing?

Any ideas?

Youtube poster irina25661 has a video that should get you where you want to go. While his problem is the opposite, the solution is the same. If you can't believe that the answer is as involved as it is, this is common on many cars. I've had to do this on a Chrysler Crossfire some time ago.

Your shear bolts are not as hard to get out as the video shows since they are not recessed on the early cars. I tried to chisel then spin mine out, but that didn't work, so I used a grinder and removed the assembly, then backed the rest of the bolts out.

Be patient, the plastic will be very brittle.

Just had to do this very same job on my wifes MDX, a chisel worked on hers.
