Columbus Ohio, "944S 2"

so we get dropped off at the crown plaza in downtown Columbus where we are spending the night tonight.... theres this sweeeet 944 parked outside at the valet station. of course i have to go look at it. i walk up to it, its showroom clean gloss black, completely pristine interior, no cracks, immaculate, perfect beige interior, and i look on the back it said 944s and under it to the right it said "2"

never knew there was an S2? whats so different about the 944s2?

i asked the valet guy whos car it was and it was a customer, i was hoping it was one of the employees so i could chat!

sweet ride. just had to get that out there.

cross a turbo car [without the turbo] with a 968
and you get a S2 3L the last and best of the true 944's
4 valves 3L TWIN CAM MOTOR WITH THE 951 BITS AND BRAKES

Some 951 bits, some not. It does not have the 951 transmission, for example. The engine is also not the same as the 968 engine. Same displacement, but the 968 makes more power from other tweaks.

the 944 S2 has the turbo body, brakes, but not the transmission (read wrong from above... didn't think they had it). it is powered by a 3.0L twin cam (NON vario-cam, like the 968) that makes around 220 hp (around the same as a non-S turbo, but far leass tweakable for more power without major moolah). those are the main differences. they are good cars, my friend has an 89 S2, black with white and black interior, it is a SWEET ride!

as far as i know they're a bit rarer than the turbos, they were available from 1989 to 1991, while the turbo run here was 1986 to 1989, but ROW both lines continued until 1991, and both came in GLORIOUS cabriolet format as well... oh what i wouldn't give for a true turbo-cab. ah i guess i'll have to settle for the 951S

in my mind, the 944S2 (which was supposed to be the 944 Series 2, and the 968 the 944 Series 3... porsche must not have paid much attention to naming their bastard children... at least they got the engineering right!) was the natural progression of the 944S car, with updated head design, and larger displacement to go with that 4 valves per cylinder. it gave the 4 valves a reason to live and perform, since the 944S didn't really do too much in the way of that, i've driven one and it honestly didn't feel much better than my '84. although, the sound of 4 intake valves per cylinder in harmony...mmm... thats' my miata! 944 S.5

if you can make sense of any of what i just said, you deserve a medal

16 Ventiler, yo!

No, it does NOT have the turbo's transmission.

The transmission code for the S2 is 083F.

The transmission code for the Turbo is 016R or 016S.

The S2 has a stronger transmission than either the S (083D) or the non-S (016K or 016J), but it is not the same as the Turbo's transmission.

The S2's 5th gear is taller (0.778) than the 951's (0.829) and the S2's final drive is much lower (3.875) than the 951's (3.375). Overall, the 951's gearing is taller than the S2's.

WHen I was shopping for a new car, I was really having a hard time deciding between a S2 and a 951. The S2 is, by most accounts, a more polished car - but in the end I chose the easy tunability and potential for huge horsepower which the 951 offers.
