924, Rotational play @ transaxle driveshaft

Hello,
I have now identified where the drivetrain backlash in my '82 924 comes from (subject already discussed in another topic). Yesterday, I put the car on a service lift and removed the rubber inspection cover off the front of the gearbox. I reached in and tried turning the driveshaft by hand with the gearbox in neutral, and guess what: I could easily turn the driveshaft about 40 degrees with practically no resistance!
Now I am wondering what causes this free play. Does it necessarily mean that my clutch disc will have to be replaced, or could the free play occur elsewhere?

The coupling that connects the driveshaft to the gearbox input shaft is OK. I also removed the clutch inspection cover, and all that I could see in there looked completely normal to me (although you don't get a very good look through the inspection hole). The car has done about 85 000 miles and the clutch does not slip.

So, if anybody have any ideas as to what is causing this 40 degree free play, feel free to reply below or email me!

Best regards
Fredrik Larsson

You have just confirmed the diag. of a broken cluch disc hub. And no you can't see a bad disc from the inspection cover. 85K is about all you can expect from that cluch disc, however the replacement disc will be the same as a 944S2 (Much beefier!)

Goo Luck,
Lee

I've had no luck with the stock disk. The dampening springs always break prematurely. I have good luck using a 914 disk. It has much heaver dampening springs.
