951 Prices
First post long time follower... I recognize that this is a sore subject but its been on my mind lately. I am an avid BAT follower as well as a proud 1984 N/A owner. With prices on 951's SIGNIFICANTLY outstripping 944's the old adage that its cheaper to buy a 951 than add a turbo to an N/A might be worth revisiting.
I bought my 944 for $7K in great shape low miles A similar condition 951 on BAT is $20K+, one recently went for $81K (outlier for sure). My point is, you can do a heck of a lot (yourself) for $11K. 951 trans axles only go for $1-$3K. Not trying to stir the pot and Im not some ignorant 944 owner wanting more power. It just seems like the paradigm might be shifting on this topic. It also probably means that N/A are going to start rising more than they already have as 951's get out of reach for lots of people. Thoughts? |

I'm glad to see the 951 prices rising after buying a basket case and investing nearly $15k on it and a lot of beer and band-aids during the restoration. I had 3 944 NA's and loved them but when the turbo kicks in it's pure magic.

Having bought two recently I have not seen 951 prices rising. What I have seen is ultra low mile, showroom condition 951’s fetching 1980’s sticker price when adjusted for inflation. Imo the collector market has little effect on regular prices.

The last 944 turbo I bought was $2500, no problems, well maintained, 140K miles.

Just curious, what is the current market for a “driver” 951?

Cheaper in October, when people scramble for a place to park the car in the winter.

Who would pay $10k for those S parts?
Where are these buyers hiding? The 944 used part market has evaporated from my point of view; people only want to "like" pictures of parts that they have no intention of buying. In the last 8 months I have thrown away or given away thousands of dollars of after market goodies because no one will touch it for any price. |

Value as it relates to the 944 or any other car for that matter is mostly as an original condition car. Sure you could modify a 944 NA, but then the value drops. Personally I like owning a stock vehicle as the OEM intended as opposed to one heavy modified. In other words I’m not looking for the most HP for the buck.

My car, 86 951, just had the engine rebuilt prior to my purchase. It was rebuilt primarily with reliability in mind, she is completely stock. That is the main reason I bought her. She is a driver with 140k on the clock. Lots of recent work, suspension, engine etc. Paid low teens, July 2020. She came with phone dials, I added the 951 Fuchs: ![]() ![]()

Interesting subject... I've been discussing this very situation with a couple of parts distributors that I use regularly and they tell me that they've seen an uptick of 944 parts buyers. Due to to rising (albeit slowly) vehicle prices, more people want to drive a Porsche but are "scared" to take out their air-cooled treasure so the 944's are becoming more popular I guess...
Personally, I enjoy the low(ish) parts prices as I tend to go overboard with my "hobby."
