924s brakes and parts shared
1987 924s
Hello all, Looking to see other than the engine what other parts are shared between the 87 924s and the 944..and then what years merge? I am doing a total restoration on a 924 hat has been siting for 20 years. Only has 80k on the motor but most everything else (interior exterior) is rough..and thats being nice. For example looking for brake rotors the 924s search seems to be double the price than the 944 but they look the same. I've also heard some bmw parts merge over as well. thanks for sharing your knowledge. |

Make sure you search for 924S parts... Regular 924 does not share the same brake components for instance. Porsche is always improving the breed and the 924S is its best hybrid of parts form the original 924 (which shared with the Audi's and Rabbits of the day), the 924Turbo and 944 parts.

Hi KLJ,
I have an 87 924S and have learned to think of it this way, but I may yet be corrected by others with deeper knowledge: My car is mechanically similar to its 87 944 base model sibling, with the following exceptions, in which area it resembles an 83-early 85 944 base model: - front suspension control arms are steel - fuel tank - interior incl Dash - A/C and Heater/vent system Certain parts are from the VW/Audi parts bin, and you'll see this thru their cheaper pricing. Those which I've discovered include: - front control arms - heater core - ignition switch - there are likely many more I hope that helps, John

A 924S uses essentially the chassis of the early model 944 (before mid-85), with a 1986 944 early offset suspension, with late-offset wheels to sit inside the skinny fenders.
The interior, underdash, climate control, etc is the same as early model 944 as well. The engine is more or less the same as the 87-88 944, gearbox is the same but IIRC the 924S got a slightly shorter 5th gear ratio? Early 944 17-gal fuel tank. |

...suspension is early offset, wheels are late offset, right?

As said, I learned something here.
I corrected my earlier response so as not to lead anyone astray. John Last edited by jjeffries; 09-03-2020 at 03:22 AM.. |

Also, I didn’t realize 9FF was the YouTube legend, SpencerDog. Your videos have been really helpful to me.

...and there are other miscellaneous differences you come across when you've owned a 924S long enough. Here's a few:
- The correct clutch flex line that connects to the slave is an '86 944 Turbo part number (at least this is the case on mine) - The camshaft seal/race ("thicker" race/larger ID seal) is used by the 924S and later 944's - The 924S with A/C & power windows uses a 90A alternator, but all 944's with A/C (that I am aware of) use a 115A alternator

WOW! Thanks guys. That is a wealth of information. This will go a long way in helping with the restoration.

Believe it or not by some fluke I ended up running a large race in a small seal for 12 years before discovering the mismatch - never leaked... ![]() ... ... Weirdly, the 924S used an early 944 alternator with a late 944 AC compressor... |
