Oil Pan Gasket - RTV Questions
Oil pump installed two days ago...and after this I watched the Van Svenson video in which he cautions to align the pump edges (small shelves which stick out on each side) with the lower block (oil pan gasket contact surface) prior to torquing - so that there will not be a "step" on each side which could compromise effective oil pan gasket sealing at these locations.
Long story short...yep - I've got steps (0.40mm) at the aforementioned locations, and am opting to apply a bit of RTV instead of pulling things apart. I'd applied RTV to these locations on my previous 85.5 (as per Porsche specs), and believe this was grey RTV, but I need to consult the brain trust here to verify this, and/or to get recommendations for what will work best here. A related question: The oil pan gasket has two large curved surfaces...which mate with the curvature of the back and front of the lower crank girdle. The metal on these girdle locations has a very slight "pebble-grained" texture, and instead of my trying to grind this away...I'm thinking that a very thin layer of RTV along these surfaces might make sense. But would the oil pan gasket have enough pliability to make this a non-issue? |

I used Yamabond 4 on the corners. It's a non hardening sealant.
I recall reading there is a Porsche recommended sealant, but folks pointed out using a similar Permatex or the Yamabond. I happened to have a tube kicking around so I used some of it. No leaks what so ever. Also used a dab of blue locktite on the oil pan bolts and followed the rather lengthy tightening sequence. |
