Aftermarket shift knob?

I’ve had my 951 for about a year now. When I bought it, it had, and still has, an aftermarket shift knob. A small carbon fiber, or carbon fiber look knob.

The car has an annoying vibration noise from the shifter at certain RPMs or when it is in certain positions. Not terrible, but annoying. If I hold it over with my thumb, I can make it go away.

The foam in the tunnel is toast and I have a new piece coming from Pelican.

I notice that the OE was a larger knob with leather that fully covers the whole thing. Seems maybe this was designed this way to help with the issue I’m experiencing. So the question is, have any of you changed from the OE shifter to an aftermarket knob, and noticed a vibration noise start when doing that?

it's a problem for me too. I have a Lindsey short shifter replacing the OEM shifter and a screw on knob. I get a loud vibration when accelerating aggressively and it's annoying. I'm wondering if it's due to inadequate shims on the pivot shaft.

Some people try to turn back their "odometers." Not me. I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

Replaced the foam in the tunnel today with the product from Pelican. Quite pricey for a piece of flimsy foam, but it is what it is. I felt like I should go with the OE piece instead of washing sponge trick.

The foam did help. Still got some vibration in the knob, and occasionally it makes a little noise until I push the knob over a little bit, but it’s definitely better.

Maybe a weighted knob would help. Maybe there’s a knob with some dampening properties(?). Maybe I should just let it be.

Since nobody really answered my question here, and for the benefit of those who own a 944 that a PO made a change to aftermarket shift knob, I’ll go ahead and answer my own question.

The OE shift lever has 2 poly dampeners. One on the shaft, and one just under the knob. This tells me there was a recognition from the engineers that there would be some vibes and harmonic noise from the shifter area. Obviously probably best to stay with the OE shifter. Or in my case switch back or find a good dampened aftermarket knob.

Myself ....but that's me....I would go back OE & replace both dampeners ...like you call them,specially...see pics the one at the bottom which with time has a tendancy to lossen up,BTW the foam casing is ***** & don't really do any good, unless it's the oe one from the factory which you must have notice was lot stiffer,I did away with mine on my ex944 & live happily after. Also maybe you should check your shifter linkage at tranny see if every things tight Take care & good luck solving your problem.
