Turbo purchase

Guys, new to the board. Looking to purchase a 86-88 turbo. I've been through all the FAQ's on purchase, but anything specific to the turbo's I should know. Also, with the standard bolt on stuff (chips, filters, exhausts, etc) how much horsepower is realistic. 250-275 achievable? TIA

I own a 86 944t with a lot of miles on it. I ask the same question to my mechanic and he told me that the chips do great as long as your engine is tight. If not the chip does not work very well because it controls the wastegate for the turbo and when the engine has a lot of wear then the engines compresion is not as good, thus controling the wastegate doesn't do as much. So instead of buying chips he just closed off my waste gate and it made one heck of a difference.

Don't you have fuel cut-offs with the wastegate diabled and the stock chips in?

250-275 is easily achievable at the rear wheels. It would be higher than that at the crank by probably 15%. Engines can easily be pumped up.

Fuel cutoff is when you take your foot off the gas.

It runs fine to me. Thus does that mean I do not have a fuel cut-off problem.

Fuel cutoff is a safety built into the 944turbo that is in the engine computer. Whenever other safegaurds against overboost(wastegate is one) are disabled, the computer sees the boost pressure as being too high and will not allow the fuel injectors to open until boost drops back down(fractions of a second). It doesn't shut the fuel off for long, but it feels as if someone got on the brakes. I know because I forced my wastegate closed to see what a little extra boost felt like and sure enough, it jerked hard. You have to turn the ignition off to reset the computer before your computer assumes things are normal again. The only way to override the fuel cutoff safety is to put an aftermarket chip in. These either raise the boost at which the fuel cutoff occurs, or eliminates it altogether. So you haven't experienced a fuel cutoff??? That is strange. You would definitly know it if you had. You might want to see exactly what your mechanic did to make sure he didn't reduce the life of your car. It is fairly hard to break a 944 engine, but it IS possible and even more so with high pressures of boost.

Hope this helps

-Dave

I have yet to experience this. He also modified my banjo bolt. He said that if I experience the problem then he would open it up a little. Take into consideration that my baby has 156K miles on it. Thus my compression is not so good anymore. I really appreciate your info.
Thanks
Thom

Have you done a compression test?
