84 944 odometer problem again?

84 944 The familiar story: infamous VDO odometer quit so no biggie we all been there .. pick up another one at junkyard (for 10$ as is no returns) odo seems to work when spinning the back thingy. Installed after 140 miles quit again! I take it out look inside trying to find where the 'wheel of death' is can't find one, but find one wheelie is out of it place so I push it back it in the spot and working again! So I'm installing it back and it quits again!! Take apart my original speedo same thing - looks like red wheel pushed back (white arrow on the pic)
Push it back and vuola it works too! Aren't they supposed to have broken teeth or something?? The whole construction of this unit seems very shady. The whole axle(yellow arrows) with numbers and red wheel can be moved with some pressure of cause, so WTF!??

I had the exact same problem with my 924S. I bought the gear before I took my odometer out of the car. To solve the sliding shaft problem, I cut off the hub part of the old gear and slid it onto the shaft before installing the new gear. 2,200 miles and still working.

Same problem here. To fix it, I fashioned my own little plastic washer and placed it on the shaft between the red gear and the unit itself. Followed that up with a little superglue to the red gear to permanently keep it from sliding back. Voila, no more sliding shaft.

I do have the same problem with mine, will try to fix it myself, this weekend, I hope is not to hard to do. Any tips?

Basically, just be patient. Removing the metal ring around the guage will take some time if you don't want to mangle it. Just use the smallest flathead screwdriver you can find.
