turbo suspension and brakes on my N/A?

OK, I have a 1985.5 944 N/A that is my daily driver and am supercharging. I also have a 944 turbo that i am upgrading everything. I will have the turbo Brembos, Koni adjustable shocks, racing springs(front) and torsion bars. plus a bunch more

I want to put the shocks and brakes on the N/A, what’s required to use the turbo brakes? I figure the disks and calipers is all? also, are the torsion bars different between the turbo and N/A? if so I will swap them too. if I swap the front brembos on the N/A should I upgrade the rears too or will it be OK to keep the rears I have?

I am very knowledgeable in cars but I know there are a lot of differences and I don’t want to run into issues since my N/A is my daily driver.... this will have to be over a weekend.

I am upgrading this stuff because I’m supercharging the N/A and would like better braking and handling..... A fun daily driver!

also! I was under the assumption that all N/A's had steel control arms?? my N/a has aluminum control arms? AND the suspension offset is different between the 85.5 N/A and my 86 turbo? I thought they are both early but they are different?

Thanks in Advance!!

In addition to the stuff you mentioned you will need hubs and spindles off of a 86 turbo to complete the brake swap up front. At the back it is an easier job but you need the hard brake lines and the caliper spacers off of a 951 to make it work.

Torsion bars are the same, both cars should have 25.5 mm torsion bars.

And offsets on your 85.5 and 86 turbo are the same. IIRC 85.5 is when they started using AL arms up front on all 944s, but they were still early offset.

the offsets are not the same, thats what im saying. the wheels do not interchange.... my turbo wheels stick out about an inch or 2 and the N/A wheels do not fit on the turbo... the hub is a different size. why would i have to change the hub? rotor placement?

Both cars are ealy offset, unless someone changed something along the way. All 944s pre 1987 use 23.3 mm offset wheels (or close to that), all 1987 and later cars use 52.3 mm offset wheel (or again something close to that). The suspenion change has to do with the fitment of different hub to accomidate for ABS.

Anyway, the 951 wheels should fit on the 944 without any problems (unless you are using spacers to make them fit the 951, in that case you need to swap the spacers with the wheels). The 944 wheels (look like 15 inch fuchs) will not fit on your 951 because the spokes won't clear the caliper (has nothing to do with hub size).

And you have to change hubs and spindles, because the 944 hub won't fit on the 951 spindle. And the 951 spindle has the proper mounting for the 951 caliper.

well, someone must have changed something... the wheels on the turbo are early offset cup ones with no spacers. i guess i will have to pull the wheels and look. thanks for the info. i guess i will swap the shocks and front springs for now to get a better suspension onder it. and lower.... then i will look at the brakes later. no hurry

Well that won't work, the struts cannot be swapped from your 951 to the 944 unless you also swap the spindles.

And I think you need to try the wheels from the 951 on the 944 again. In pictures I see Fuchs on your 944, those only fit on early offset cars, so the wheels from the 951 should fit.

if they're genuine cup wheels then they'll be late offset.

they are not genuine, i beleve they are an off brand(pretty heavy)

well ****, i may try and sell the shocks then.... unless i can find another set of spindles pretty cheap. i may just use the springs only....

all my ideas... thrown out the window!! lol

I think they both have 23.5mm torsion bars, only the S2, 968 (24mm) and M030 (most 25.5) option gives you bigger T bars.

Last summer I did the brake upgrade on my 86 NA. I got all parts off an 86 Turbo salvage. I used the front struts and spindles off the turbo. Brembo 4 piston calipers and rotors. The rear calipers required, I believe it was 4mm spacers to get the calipers to center on the rotors. I also had to add the bias valve because the NA didn't have one.
Everything worked great. Can't help you with the wheels as I used 18" aftermarket ones.
I also used Koni inserts in front and Ground Control coil over Konis in the rear without torsion bar delete.
Hope some of this info is useful
Good Luck
