How to check for LSD on 924 or 931?

Hi there!

How can i check if a <80' 924 or 931 has LSD or not, short of lifting the wheels off the ground?

Can i check tranny number (prefferable)? Or option codes (where are they?)

I'll be doing this on euro-cars only.

Thanx!

Look for the options code tag...should have this on Euro cars. On a 944 .....it is located behind the carpet, between the rear lens housing, in the hatch area....

The code is 220.

Use this for interpretation of the code numbers:

Here is the option code list for 924...uses the same 220 code to identify the LSD:

I heard you jack up the car's rear and turn the left wheel and see which way the right wheel turns. I just don't remember which way was(meant) which

Yes...i know this...but i specifically asked for way to find it out w/o lifting the wheels. Some of junkyards i'm going to check have loose transmissions and most of them won't go out to the wrneck and jak up the wheels just to rapport it to me.

So question remains:

Is there any difference between transmission numbers regarding LSD or open differantial?

Now....this is only a hunch based on my knowledge of 944s...it may apply to 924s...

The 944 NA uses the transmission code 016K and 016J:
http://www.928porsche.net/model944.htm

The 944S uses the transmission code 083D or 083F:
http://www.928porsche.net/model944s.htm

The 944 Turbo uses the transmission code 016R:
http://www.928porsche.net/model944t.htm

All 944s used the 220 option code to identify the LSD.

I understand the 220 is a bolt-on option for all the trannies (i.e., same tranny code for car of the same year with or without the LSD >>> 016K, 016J, 016K, 083D, 083F). Can anyone confirm?

Therefore, my hunch is.....you should know if LSD comes with the tranny without jacking the car up if you can find 220 on the option tag.

Hmm, i heard that you can read on top of tranny case:

LSD should be 8Q#####
Standard is: QM#####

But this is 944 - wisdom...
