1983 944 Coup Timing belt / Water pump install
I recently purchased the pump and timing kit. My mechanic told me that I will need "seals" and I cannot find anything anywhere related to seals above and beyond what came in the timing kit. Anyone have any insight? Seals? Not sure what else he is looking for...

What you have pictured above are the belts and rollers only...which do not need seals.
But the water pump does indeed require that a gasket be placed between it and the engine block's mating surface, first being sure to very thoroughly (and carefully) clean up these surfaces prior to doing this. Jury's out on applying a bit of extra sealant (such as Curil-T) on either one or both of the mating surfaces...I don't do this, but others might. The other seals required are those for the thermostat - which can vary in number and design depending on the year of your car and the pump itself. Typically, there is a rubber gasket installed below the thermostat, plus sometimes a ring-gasket around the thin metal upper "shoulder" of the thermostat, and/but usually or, a thicker rubber gasket which goes just over or under this shoulder (under in my case - 87NA), prior to placing in the thermostat itself, finally locking this down with the metal circlip. Hint...when you place this circlip, do arrange the open end of this in a location which will be easiest to reach from either the top of the engine (if you work from the top) or bottom of the engine, if you typically work from under the car. This circlip, as it is, is a total PITA to remove...so do what you can to make this easier! This would also be a good time to either replace, or at least carefully examine/clean up, the protruding studs and bolt holes associated with this (pump) installation. (Jury's also out applying Loctite (blue) to these fasteners (my choice), leaving them alone, or applying anti-seize to them). edit: PS...there may or may not also be a turbo block off plate (allows the later turbo pump to be used on an NA car) with your kit, which would also qualify as a "seal." I can't either unless he is planning on replacing the camshaft and balance shaft seals. If they need it this is the best time to do it because there is more room.

The seals he is telling you to replace are likely the “front of engine seals” commonly known as “foes”. It’s good practice on these cars to replace the water pump every other belt change and at that time also do the rollers and foes.
If you ask any vendor who knows 944’s for a foes kit they will give you everything you need.
