Balance Shaft Belts

The instructions for the balance shaft belts is hard to follow. I thought I had it right, but must have screwed up the "U" and the "O"s. Where are the O\"O"s and "U"s suposes to line up. It said the woodriff key. Is taht the circular hole or is it the long sloot that has the 90 degree piece sticking out of it? If any one has a picture of the upper one it would help.

Hope this is not a late reply & will be of some help. The "O" should be straight up on the top shaft. This is on the driver's side.
The "U" should be straight up on the lower shaft, passenger's side. When the holes in the sheet metal washers on the front of the pulleys are alligned so that the holes in the pulleys and "O" and "U" are visible, a little key on the washer should go into the keyway in the pulley.

I agree the directions are hard to follow. I messed mine up when I changed belts. Gosh, did it vibrate!

The medal fiiting coming off the fuel rail stressed and cracked, pouring gas onto the manifold. I had 3 feet of flames comming out the back of the car that I knew nothing about. I stoped, turned off the key (wich stoped the fuel pump). I was at a post office and they had an wxtinguisher to put out my car. New (used) fuel rail, injectors, all plastic under the hood, wiring harness, and paint on the hood. I finished it up on Sat and she runs fine.

drew 1, Do you by chance have a diagram or drawing of the layout of the balance shafts?
I will have to do this in the next couple of months,(winter in minnesota) as I do not have any records on this 85/2 944/8 valve.
Where would any of you recommend obtaining better and more precise information other than the almost useless Haynes Manual?

Hi Joe,
Looking at an early 85 that belts is one of the things I,m doing, here's what I see.

1. Get motor to TDC on #1 cylinder. In hole in bell housing, by the flywheel sensors, a mark on the flywheel should line up with the pointer. If you can get under the car there is a notch on the motor side of the bell housing by the starter. A notch in the fly wheel should line up.

2. At TDC the mark in the cam sprocket should line up with the notch in the back front cover at 1:00 position. If the mark is at 7:00, turn the motor one more time & line them up.

3. On the top balance shaft, drivers side, the "O" should be on top, approximately. On the back pulley flange, a notch should line up with the notch in the back timing cover, at 12:00. If you have the front flange off, you should have an allining mark on the front of the pulley. The key in the balance should be towards the top, under the "O".

4. On the bottom shaft, the "U" should be on top, approximately. On the back pulley flange, a notch should line up with apointer on the back cover at 7:00. If the front flange is off the key will be up under the "U". There should be an alligning mark on the pulley.

5. From looking through info, late 85 on 8V motors are the same except they do not have the "U" on the pulleys. The shaft keys should be on top on both shafts, but the "O" should be down on the bottom shaft.

6. There are 2 adjustment pulleys. The bottom right is used to set belt tension & the one just above the balance shaft is used to prevent one side of the belt from interfering with the other or pulleys.

Thanks for the help Drew, I had the luck of comming across a near new, belt tension guage complete with all the tools and instructions. After pricing out what it costs to replace balance and timing belts vs. buying the tools to do it right, I figure the first time will be a break even situation but after that I'll be money ahead and best of all be doing my own work too.

Glad you got the stuff to do it, I like doing it myself, too. Putting an Electromotive engine mangement on a 944 I got for my daughter now. It costs more than the car did. Hope it works.
