Rear carpet shapes

The carpet in my 84 944 was damaged so I sourced a used replacement. I think the seller said it was from an 83 944. Both have wood reinforcement panels on the bottom. I think later cars had some kind of plastic or foam, but both carpets have wood.

Upon installation I immediately noticed that the fit was almost the same but not identical. Specifically, the flaps on the side that cover the compartments behind the wheel are slightly different. They are a little wider and have a different curvature.

I finally traced each one onto a white piece of plastic to see the direct comparison. The one that fits perfectly is traced in black marker, and the replacement is traced in blue marker.

What's up with these two different carpet shapes with slightly different side flaps? Everything else seems to be the same in the way they both snap to the rear upper edge and how they both fit onto the spare tire. I really didn't expect to see this.

The reason there is a taller trunk area is due to the fact there is a transaxel back there. they shaped the trunk oddly to allow for accessories, tranny, muffler and suspenders, Yeup its oddly shaped but it works...

The 83 had a manual sunroof. The 84 has an electric sunroof, with the mechanism in the left rear quarter panel. That is why the carpet is smaller on the left rear.

The two carpets have different part numbers in PET.

+1...because of the sunroof mechanism.

I'll take a look at my 951's carpet, it has a sun-roof, that works when it wants to. I wonder if my carpet is oblong?

Lift the carpet in the cargo hole on the driver side ,then you'll see the sunroof mechanisme.

2 things you 2 fergot to mention, the passenger sides carpet has a indentation on its shape to allow for the fuel nozzle inlet, and the lump in the back for the spare tire. Hell, I had a 6o's stang that had all kinds of weird shapes to its carpet...

I don't have a sunroof in my 1984, and yet my rear carpeting would seem to be the smaller version that would accommodate the electric mechanism in the side quarterpanel.

Any variation in the particle-board backing/cubby lids? Is a 924 carpet any narrower, I'm not sure if they're similar, but wouldn't rule out a hand-me-down...

I think the 924's interior dimensions are the same as the 944, I know the from ordering a replacement door, that they are pretty darn close. But Carpet size shouldt be too different. Like the other gents say, its due to accessories placement that dictate the carpetcut, and shape...As long as it fits to your preference, you should be good to go..
