924 vibration between 50 - 60 mph
Thanks for reading this.
My 1982 924 has a shimmy/vibration starting at 50 mph and smooths out around 60 mph. I have checked the suspension/ steering for any loosness. Everything seems tight. The tires look fine and I had all 4 ballanced. The two rear wheels have a bend on the inner lip, looks like from a tire mounting machine, but the runout at the tires looks fine and they ballanced fine. The car has 100k miles and I have had it a couple of months. any Ideas?? Thanks Andy |
The last two times I have had tires balanced at two different locations where I live, they were done incorrectly. You could put the tires on the rear wheels and spin them up with the rear raised. If they are out, you will feel/see the vibration. Just a thought....

If suspension/front end is tight, wheels and tires are ok, tire balance is verfied by a second balancing. Then, check front wheel
bearing wear/torque. I have cleared this 50-60 MPH transition shimmy problem by increasing bearing torque by 1-ft.lb or to next castle nut position on older wheels/bearing race.(personal remedy). |
Thanks.
I checked the wheel bearings tonight and they were loose. I tightened as per the Haynes manual, snugged until I could just move the thrust washer. This got rid of the play and reduced the vibration about 50% I will look further this weekend. Thanks |
I had the same problem. I just replaced all my wheel bearings. There is only just a very slight shimmy now. I can live with it.

The bearings felt fine and I repacked the outers... Can the bearings feel OK and sound smooth but still be bad??
