Where can I get rear hatch struts?

The existing rear hatch struts that the PO put on my 924 are so strong that they spread the frame from the window farther every time I open it. Does anyone know of a company besides porsche that sells better working struts?

Pelican might have em...

Do a search ... you can buy 94-95 Jeep Wrangler struts on Ebay that are 1/3 the strength of the OEM units.I use them on my race car due to having a lexan rear hatch.

Anyone know if those jeep struts are still strong enough to "auto-lift" the hatch by way of the cabin switch? Not likely would be my guess...but seeing as how my hatch-release motor still works, I'd kinda like my car to retain this feature.

The jeep ones are OK but you'll need to modify them if you want your rear defroster and hatch light to continue to function since these both ground through the strut and the OEM has a metal connector to the body and the jeep has a plastic one.

I tried removing the Porsche metal ball joint and screwing it onto the jeep strut, but the threads were completely different. So, I got rid of the jeep ones and went with new OEM.

I have the OEM Stabilis version and the autolift is barely able pop the hatch in the cold winter months, so I imagine the jeep version would provide the autolift only when the gas inside is sufficiently warm.

Hmmm...I'll likely go the distance at some point and do a hatch reseal. PIA I realize...but likely worth it if done with care.

Purchase a killer Strosek fiber glass hatch kit and get the custom look, no glass issues, no problems, I might do it my self one day....Not oem, but bad to the bone, just the same..;)http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1619870609.jpg

Well, as many of us have found out, the struts made for our cars are too strong and generally the stronger struts help increase the separation of the glass and frame. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1620140161.jpg

"Anyone know if those jeep struts are still strong enough to "auto-lift" the hatch by way of the cabin switch?"

No, they are not. That way the force is minimal when the hatch is closed. Anything that will "auto-lift" will put strain on the glass frame. But they will hold the hatch open with no problems.

And "modifying" them only consists of moving the electrical terminals which will take you one minute per end. Real tough job (sarcasm).

I can provide the part number since I was the one who originally started using them over ten years ago and it's somewhere in Rennlist forum.

wildcat077 05-08-2021 03:09 AM

Yes they are still strong enough to lift a glass hatch ... with a little help
They are a Monroe item , P/N 901169 and i think they were something like $20.00 each
