I see no reason for it not to fit, since people have put 951 trannys in NA's. so I would so almost definetly

There are differences amongst the cars. Britwrench knows many of them as does So Cal. But I dont see either of them on line these days

ok, I heard you can put any tranny in the early car because the speed sensor is on the wheel not the tranny, but you cannot put an early trans in a late car because no speed sensor. So as far as I can tell you just don't plug in the speed sensor on the late tranny and all is well, am I wrong?

ae recently took an early model and put it in a late model. I have an '86 tranny in my '84. Mine was easier because I just disregarded the late model speedo fitting. The mounts were different, too.

no, just save the mounts from your old transmission. The holes are the same, just the mounting system is different

you can use a late tranny on an early car.....
just ignore the electronic speedo connector....
the mounts are the same.....

The tranny mount changed but its backwards compatible.... but if you have your old mount use that...

cool, I'm pretty sure I'm going to put in an s2 tranny with lsd, will it also work? My mounts are almost brand new so I'll just reuse those. I can't wait to get this thing fixed.

I'm sure they fit but what it puzzeling is the input shaft on the early 016 is around 4" and the later ones around 5 1/2"...must be a lot of space in the coupler?

then the other question of the Audi 016 which has a shaft tip for the Audi's pilot bushing (but still measures around 5 1/2") shouldn't matter...anyone know?

All 944 transaxles are interchangable.

Mounts: Early mounts can be fitted to late cars.

Speedo: Late sender can be fitted to early cars.

There's no issues w/the coupler that I know of. Make sure your bit is in there before you start applying torque.
