Chances are that it is the new one. I don't think they make the older ones.

They do still sell the old ones -- the first one I ordered from Beck Arnley was an old one...the new ones will have a chrome belt guard about 4" long covering the pump pulley -- it will be held on by 2 nuts. While were on the subject of water pumps, does any one know if these pumps are abnormally loud (as in bearing whine)? Im trying to track down a noise & keep coming back to the pump....

ok my dads 944... we just bought it a little while back and i dont remember how many miles were on it but it made a grinding noise.... well not really just like a bearing kinda grinding.. anyways i didnt know it was the pump cuz it did not leak any....( i thought it was the power steering.. that leaked anyone else have probelems with that? ) and well he was driving it back one day from some apointment.. and then coolant leaked everywhere and we never found the cause it wasnt the pump though it was all from the back of the engine.. i figured that the bearing seized temporarily and the engine was so hot that it overcame the pressure of some fitting and just leaked out.... and then shortly afterwards the pump seized... so i think it may be time to change that pump with the whine....... good luck....

Oh and by the way.. the car should be really quiet at idle... I test drove a 944 the other day and i forgot it was on because it was so quiet... and all i could hear was the fan every once in a while... i think if you hear any noise something is wrong... unless you changed to some funny loud mod..... The exhaust was tuned but you could only hear it when you applied power.... and boy did it sound cool.... anyways... later.....

my 944 had a whining noise in the front I changed the water pump and timing belt along with the balance shaft belt. After all that I still had the same noise. I took it down agian and found the shaft tensioner bearing was bad. I replaced all the idlers and tensioners plus the seals.
