Potentially stupid manifold question.

Through some reading, I find that the early 944's had the cast exhaust manifold. The later ones had the sheet steel one. My 87 has the early cast unit. It is not leaking or cracked. Would I benifit at all by going to the later unit. Car is already chipped.

In short no.

The exhaust systems used on 944 series cars are really not restrictive at all. An example of this is 951s on stock headers/cross over pipes making over twice the stock levels of power.

Your NA has the same headers as the european cars that not only didn't have a cat, but had higher compression, and made more power. The late model headers should flow marginally better if any, but it wouldn't make a difference on your car. The changeover happened for durability reasons. The 2 into 1 section of the iron headers is a common spot of failure. If this happens however, the solution is neither complicated, nor expensive (fixed by welding, and since it's not stainless, most places can do this without a problem).
