Downpipe gaskets
Hi,
My name is Ben and I am 15 me and my friend just got a 1987 Porsche 924s. When we run the engine it smokes from around the exhaust downpipe on cylinders 1 and 4and there is also a very slight oil leak. The gaskets where the downpipes go to the engine block on cylinders 1 and 4 seem to be leaking oil or at least have oil on them. I have tightened the bolts around these gaskets (they were a little loose) I am not sure if it stopped smoking a have a few things to do before I can run it again. Does anyone know if it is possible to replace these gaskets without removing the engine from the car? |

Yes, you can replace everything on the engine with the exception of the crankshaft and the block without removing the engine.

Welcome Ben.
Your 924S’s exhaust manifolds … are they tubular and smooth, like headers, or rough (and therefore cast iron)? My 87 came with the tubular manifolds, and they were cracked, which is very common, I’ve learned. If you run the car - somewhere VERY WELL VENTILATED - you might be able to see if this is your problem, or at least part of it. I replaced mine with cast iron manifolds from an early 944. It seemed to me like welding/repairing the tubular manifolds would be a temporary fix. When I was 15 (in 1981!) I got my first car, a project MG Midget. There was no internet then, but a friend of my Dad’s helped me learn to wrench. We will all be happy to help you with your 924S. John |

The header is smoking because the cam box is leaking oil on it.
