Used Cvs...

Hi guys just wanted to know if anyone had any advice/experience putting used CV joints on their car. The ones Im interested in have been inspected and packed (90 day guarantee). Is this a good way to go? Thanks alot

Most of the time, CV's don't go bad, they just get void of grease.

I'm sure re-packed CV's are fine - if they were bad, they most likely wouldn't bother re-packing them.

How much money are you saving? Since I just replaced mine, I can tell you the peace of mind knowing I have new joints back there is great.

If you're on a tight budget, and you can save a lot, maybe ok. 90 days isn't a whole lot of time. Just something to think about.

P.S. You doing the work yourself? It's not hard, and the money you save by doing it yourself you can put into brand new joints.

Ya - Sid is right....I forgot to mention.....

Don't bother buying re-built CV's - the price isn't that much better than buying a whole new half-axle.

If you want to save money - just by a re-packing kit (I paid $18 for mine - came with grease and a bew boot) and re-pack them or have someone do it for you and pay them the hour's labor. My CV's were clicking......a total of $65 later, the sound was gone.

I can get an axle with two repacked joints for $50.00 vs $188.00 a new unit. Quite a difference, so I figure if the used ones have been inspected it may be worth it. I didnt know if anyone had an horror stories or a strong opinion against.

50 bucks is hard to beat. It might depend on how long you're going to keep the car. Any track time in the future? If I were going to the track, I'd want new ones.

If you don't abuse it, maybe the used ones would be ok. I'm just a little leery of used parts for this application. That's just me. But, if you're on a really tight budget, it might make more sense than not doing anything at all.
