Dash grounding problem
 
I had two S2s now one. Both showed oil pressure gauge pegged as soon as the car was started so I just assumed it was normal for the cars. Now one car has water temp gauge also pegging as soon as the key is turned on. Mechanic says pegged oil pressure gauge is not normal and assumes both problems are caused by grounding problem in the dash and it makes sense to me. I have the panel out but don't see any grounding wires to it from the frame or anywhere else. The water temp sensor is fine.

The instrument cluster grounds are through the connectors at the printed circuit on the back of the cluster, If you look at the wiring diagram it is obvious.

Pegged oil pressure gauge usually tells me it is time for a new sensor. Normally, it will start pegged when cold and then drop as it warms up.

Oops, just noticed you also mentioned the temp gauge. As Rosanne Rosanadanna always said...."Never mind."

Be sure to check the connections at the oil pressure sensor. On my 87NA these are located directly underneath the oil filter and, although they are booted, tend to get pretty oily over time.
