I am pretty biased towards HID, which you can either purchase from our site sponsor (Dapper Lighting Classic V2), or you can retrofit a set for yourself (DIY).
https://www.dapperlighting.com/products/dapper-lighting-7-inch-classic-v2-projector-kit

I chose to retrofit using a 7" glass jeep wrangler halogen housing. I then purchased the projector housing (murimoto), ballast, bulb and relay system. Photos of the setup are in my "Garage". There are a few threads on here and rennlist documenting how its done if you google it.

The e-code headlights are a huge upgrade, highly suggest going that route for easy installation and proper look (if you're interested in that sort of thing).

The other excellent bang-for-the-buck upgrade is using a relay harness to bump the voltage at the lights. This takes the switch in the dash out of the power circuit to give you less voltage drop. More voltage at the bulb = more light output.

I did both of these on my car and have more than enough light for night driving.

For me, the best option was new H4 lenses and I added a new harness that takes power right from the alternator.

When I pulled apart the headlight switch (root cause of my no-lowbeams issue, methinks), the metal contacts were not just blackened but also pitted by the arcing caused by all the current passing across them. So I will be following Chris with relays and primary juice coming off the alternator.

led lights

I just ordered a set of lights from Only944 which contains new lenses and LED bulbs. I will also be adding my upgraded light/relay system. Fingers crossed....

Once I install next week, I will provide a review.

husker: Is the relay system for your LED headlights? Compared to incandescent bulbs the LEDs don't use much current and there's not a lot to gain from a new relay harness. I don't love the aesthetics of the LED light but definitely recognize that a real benefit of the LED bulbs is that you can get good light output even with older wiring. But, the harness would be nice to have if you decide to switch from LED back to a standard bulb.

I went the dapper lighting route. I got the HID 7" projector kit and I really can't imagine needing any better light projection. Easy to install. Using the relay off the battery will give you quick and consistent charge and output. I didn't use the relay at first and they were slow to charge and sometimes may not come on at all.

Good call... hadn't thought about that. I will get the lights installed first and go from there.

I went for led bulbs off ebay and I find that they are a big improvement with a whiter light beam rather than the old dim yellow in comparison.

Is it still six months wait time? Do these fit 968 and has anyone run them on a 968? I’d really like to do this upgrade

Rickster,

Any update on Kyle's bulbs ?
We spoke and i'm considering getting a set for the H4 lights on my 911, according to Kyle it should be plug and play , i already installed ceramic connectors but have yet to find a suitable bulb that would make night driving a whole lot " less " scarier !

Amazon.... LX-LIGHT 7" Round Black Cree LED. these are VERY modern and VERY bright. Worth the 90$ a pair. Fits in the 7 inch sealed housing of the 944 perfectly.

these are sealed headlight replacements, not bulbs. Plugs in directly, zip-ties may be needed.

Yes, I just installed last week, which was very simple.
The results are 'night and day' (pun intended). The new LED bulbs are white, unlike my previous yellow H4s... Also, the reflectors make the car appearance to be stock.

Overall: I would give them an A. Great price, simple install, and OEM appearance.
