Bosch Platniums

I was considering buying some of the 4 prong bosch platniums. If you have them, is it worth the 30 bucks, does it help at all??

Why shouldn't they be used on a Turbo? Is there something better to use on a turbo?

On a Turbo the open design of the Platinum +4 could result in catastrophic detonation problems because the mixture could self ignite on the hot electrode. This is not a problem with N/A cars.

I have had the Bosch +4 plugs in my Turbo for about a year. I am going to take tem out and put them in my NA 944 that I drive every day and put rugular Bosch plat's in my turbo. I wonder if I have hurt anything in my Turbo? How would I tell?

You're not supposed to use platinum tipped spark plugs on your turbo, that's the reason why +4s aren't recommended...

You likely didn't do any damage, but might've reduced performance, because your car does have knock sensors.

I shouldn't use the regular Bosch Plat's in my turbo either? Just stay with copper?

Ahmet, are you sure about any platinum in turbos? I was under the impression that the 4s were a no no because more metal getting hot creates a higher chance of detonation. I don't think the type of metal has anything to do with it. Every shop I've ever talked to says to use the platinum Bosch, but just to stay away from the 4s. Correct me if I'm wrong(I'm running bosch platinums right now).

Thanks,
Dave

I have been told specifically by many Porsche 951 owners to use Bosch Platinums in my 951, and have been doing this since I owned it, and the previous owner used these same spark plugs. Even Porsche catalogues suggest using Bosch Platinums, and I can not see how they can not be good for the 951's? Have I missed something in all of this?

I went to Bosch's web site and it says not to use the +4's in the turbo but does
not have that notation next to the regular plat's so they must be fine to use in the turbo.

What gets (too) hot on the +4s is the platinum center electrode, thus I say NOT to use ANY platinum tipped/all platinum spark plugs on your Turbo. I may be wrong, but I also HIGHLY doubt that.

Sorry 1.2 Porsche specifies WR7DP for the 951 that is a platinum tipped plug. I looked it up at work today on the MicroFiche. It is also listed in the Bosch catalog.

BTW you guys should see the funny plugs in the 996. We had one in the shop yesterday with a misfire and it has the funniest looking set of four electrode plugs I've ever seen. The center electrode is a couple of mm above the four side electrodes. Looks like an unfinished platinum plus four but its copper electrode. Stange and you an only get them at the Porsche dealer.

Yes, I would have to say so. Just keep them away from turbos.

I'm confussed.
BOSCH make 2 types of platinum plugs.
What I call standard; have 1 V shaped ground electrode in the normal position and Plus 4's which have 4 ground electrodes around the outside. I recommend the standard platinum to every one I talk to no matter what they drive. They are great. I currently run standard platinum's in my 944.
Will I gain any by switching to Plus 4's?
