Winter is approaching
Just wondering how '44s do in the winter since mine is a daily driver. Should I though on some snow tires? Take any other precautions? How does it handle in snow? Should I make sure I wax it again before the first snow?

I drive my 944 in the snow with my regular tires but snow tires would help. It goes great in the snow due to the 50/50 weight distribution and the low torque at low rpm's. i think a good wax job never hurts.

Yes a waxing always helps. Here in Pennsylvania my 944 handles the snow quite well but potholes are a killer. Also, I left it for a few days once last winter and noticed how much leaves/snow/ice can accumulate after sliding down the windshield and into the engine bay. Just be sure to check this often.

Four snow tires and you'll have no problem, if you have and N/A or an S I highly reccomend mudflaps to protect the side of the car.
Snow tire recomendations: Soetihng in the high performance category, this means NO BLIZZAKS as they cause truly scary handling. My two reccomendations Michelin Pilot Alpin Pirelli Winter 21/240 Snowsport Dunlop also has high performance snow but it is not as good as these. |

I picked up an extra set of cookie cutters for the winter. I figure mounting and re-mounting tires will make short work of the finish on my rims, not to mention all the crud on the roads in the winter. I have found my 944 to be OK in the snow, but even with new tires it's easy to swap ends if you're not careful.
I'm still picking out a good set of snow/ice tires to make it through the season...anyone have any experience buying online? What's the verdict on something like tirerack.com? |

I have purchased many sets of tires from TireRack.com, I've always been pleased with their service, even when I had to send a defective tire back. (Kuhmo Race tire started coming apart at an autoX)

have you ever driven in snow? why would a 50/50 car handle anything but better than other cars, If they use salt on the roads wash your car all the time wax can only do so much. Love your car like your wife.(love your wife like your car)

I have driven in snow, but not in a rear wheel drive car. I guess it does make sence that a 50/50 car would handle better, I never thought about that. Thanx

I haven't ad my 951 in snow, but my 50/50 Alfettas were better than my close to 50/50 Saabs (yeah surprise on the Saab weight distribution.) As well as the Saabs do, the old adage that a tire can never do more than 100% allows the front tires to devote 100% to turning and the rears to put a little into power! Just go for skinny tall winter tires and she should do great!
